Four Spanish Universities (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universitat de Barcelona, Universidad de Granada y Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) are among the top 200 world universities at the Web Ranking of World Universities, also known as Webometrics. If we evaluate the best top 500 universities in the world, Spain would have 27 Higher Institutions, and should we evaluate the top 1.000, Spain would have 42 Higher Education Institutions included.
This ranking is an initiative from the Cibermetria Lab, pertaining at CSIC (National Board for Higher Scientific Research) This ranking assesses the volume, visibility and impact of the web pages published by universities, paying a special attention to their scientific production (essays on academic journals, contributions to congresses, drafts, monographies, doctoral thesis, articles, etc.) but also taking into account other materials such us those coming from courses, seminars’ bibliography, digital libraries, data base, multimedia, personal web pages, etc. As well, it is also examined the general information about the institutions, its departments, investigation groups, support services or students attending courses and those who are working too.
Web Ranking of World Universities was firstly published in 2004 and it is produced and updated twice a year. The data are collected in January and June and published a month later. The evaluation assesses more than 16.000 world higher education institutions
